DESIGNER'S VOICE

"Do we really need waterproofing?"

These words were spoken by outdoor writer Shotaro Takahashi when he first saw the prototype during the development of SNAP. It was a decisive statement that shaped the direction of SNAP.

In the summer of 2018, I began my first assignment as a designer for SNAP. Starting with unfamiliar sewing machines, I wrestled to bring ideas to life and began a cycle of testing and iterating.

I believed that waterproofing was essential for a pouch, an item meant to carry important things. To ensure water wouldn't get into the pouch even during sudden rains, I focused on waterproof materials and water-resistant zippers, iterating through over 20 prototypes that piled up on my desk.

When I showed one of these prototypes to Shoutaro Takahashi, his response was the opening statement.

I was startled. My insistence on waterproofing had resulted in a pouch with poor accessibility and practicality.

"This won't do," I realized, and decided to rethink the idea from scratch.

Rather than making the main body waterproof, why not make it easy to remove quickly if it starts raining? Yes, let's create a pouch with quick access and easy detachability!

In that moment, my vision cleared, and I could see the goal ahead.

To quickly attach and detach the pouch from the backpack, we needed a completely new method of removal. It had to be easily detachable yet securely fixed to the harness. Balancing these conflicting requirements was a challenge. The solution we arrived at was "SNAP FLAPS," a flap that secures the main body using shoulder harnesses instead of traditional stoppers.

Now, you can effortlessly attach SNAP while wearing your backpack and easily detach it to wear separately. This flap made such usage possible.

From sketching lines to sewing techniques, I received numerous critiques from Saito and rebuilt prototypes to enhance SNAP's functionality as a tool. Initially anxious about its reception, I'm delighted that SNAP received such positive feedback upon release that we had to immediately order additional production.

Enjoy using SNAP with your favorite backpack in the field!
