The Ultimate Solution for Japan’s Mountains

ZENN CONCEPT

The ZENN series was born from a single goal: to create the ultimate gear for Japan’s unique mountain terrain. Designed for hikers who seek to go further with lighter equipment, ZENN reimagines the tent from the ground up—built not for the Rockies or the Alps, but for the rugged and varied peaks of Japan. This is reliability, redesigned for where you actually hike.

ZENN DOME SHELTER

The ZENN DOME SHELTER is a minimalist, single-wall dome shelter for solo adventurers. Weighing just 895g (fly + poles), it offers exceptional ease of setup and outstanding protection against rain and wind—without compromising strength or comfort.

Easy to Set Up, Built to Withstand the Elements

DURABLE DOME TENT

The dome structure provides excellent stability in exposed terrain. To ensure performance in real-world alpine environments, we conducted wind tunnel testing. Even under extreme winds of 20 m/s, the shelter retained its form and livable interior. For added security in strong winds, five guy lines are included.

RELIABLE POLES

The sturdy crossed pole design is reinforced with a central hub to maximize rigidity. We use DAC’s Featherlite NFL (Φ8.5mm), a premium aluminum alloy pole known for its outstanding strength-to-weight ratio. Its advanced materials (TH72M alloy) ensure flex resistance and structural integrity under wind load, without adding unnecessary weight. For added visibility, pole ends are color-coded yellow to simplify setup.

MAIN FABRIC

The fly is made from 20D ripstop nylon with silicone/PU coating and fully seam-sealed for 2,000mm waterproof protection. Waterproof zippers prevent rain from seeping in. The 15cm bathtub floor design provides added protection against ground moisture and rain, keeping you dry and secure through the night.

EASY SET UP

Pitching is intuitive and fast—just clip the fly to the poles. All hooks feature reflective details, and the pole tips are marked for visibility in low light or poor weather. The shelter requires a minimum of six stakes for setup. Additional guy-out points allow you to adjust stability depending on terrain or wind conditions.

Designed for Real Comfort

SPACIOUS VESTIBULE

The entry is placed on the long side of the tent for easy access, leading into a generously sized vestibule that accommodates your pack, shoes, or cooking setup. The smart layout minimizes stress even in tight alpine campsites, prioritizing comfort and ease of use.

OPTIMIZED VENTILATION

A large adjustable vent at the top of the shelter enhances airflow, while the mesh panel at the entrance allows for both visibility and ventilation. This dual system reduces condensation and maintains interior comfort in variable weather conditions.

MESH POCKET

An interior mesh pocket keeps essentials like your headlamp or phone within easy reach.

COMPACT DESIGN

The stuff sack features compression straps for easy packing. With a packed size of just 27×15×10cm, the ZENN DOME SHELTER slips neatly into your backpack, giving you more freedom when organizing your load.

PRODUCT MOVIE

DESIGNER'S VOICE

As the name ZENN suggests, this shelter was developed in pursuit of the “optimal solution for the Japanese mountains.”
From the beginning, our top priorities were lightweight design, compactness, and weather resistance. At one point, we even explored radical prototype concepts that sacrificed convenience entirely for the sake of performance. One such idea was a floorless dome shelter. It offered better space efficiency than typical floorless designs and was even lighter than conventional dome tents. We thought, “This might be it!” We pushed further—eliminating the entrance zipper entirely and instead having the user crawl in from the base. A bold concept—but as expected, it proved impractical in strong winds and had to be scrapped.

We also tested a prototype using an aluminum-laminated fabric to enhance heat retention inside the tent. Unfortunately, it suffered from severe condensation due to temperature changes during sleep, and that too was abandoned.

We went through many such trials, and while each one was fun and full of creative excitement, we struggled to find a true breakthrough. Eventually, we chose to set aside our designer egos and return to the fundamental purpose of a shelter. And in doing so, we arrived at a surprisingly simple answer:
“To sleep soundly and safely in the mountains.”
It’s a simple truth that good sleep leads to safer, more fulfilling days on the trail. It’s also the core function that most hikers seek from their tent.

With that renewed focus, we restarted the design process. The final result includes a zipper-entry and a waterproof bathtub-style floor—not for luxury, but entirely for dependable rest in the wild.

Revisiting and reimagining the classic alpine dome tent—long considered complete—was a thrilling experience, much like developing our ZENN backpack. And if you happen to spot this ZENN Shelter at a campsite this year, don’t be surprised if we come running over in excitement.
(Just make sure the door is zipped up properly!)
